About this map
Australia is in the middle of a data centre buildout that is moving faster than the public record
of it. This map exists to make that buildout legible: where the facilities are, who runs them, what
they consume, and — critically — which new gas and coal projects are being proposed to power them.
What the categories mean
Status is where a facility is in its lifecycle: operational, under construction,
or proposed. Confidence is a separate judgement about how strong the evidence is:
confirmed, reported, or uncertain. Both appear in every popup. A proposed
facility can be confirmed (it is in a lodged development application); an operational one can be
uncertain (a single trade-press mention).
Sourcing
No facility, figure or status is on this map without at least one primary or reputable secondary
source. Primary means a planning document, an EPBC referral, a company or ASX release, or a
government register. We do not estimate. Where a number is unknown, it is blank rather than guessed.
Community reports
Anyone can report a site. Nothing goes on the map unvetted. A person checks every submission
against the documentary record — existence, coordinates, operator, status — before it is published,
and contentious entries need a second curator to sign off. Published entries that began as a
community report say so, with the verification date.
The link lines
A line between a data centre and an energy project means someone on the record connected
them — a proponent statement, a planning document, a connection application. Proximity is not a
link. If we cannot cite it, there is no line.
Corrections
If something here is wrong, tell us and we will fix it or annotate it. We do not quietly delete.
